DataBeyond Provides Tech for Sorting 300,000 Tonnes of PET Bottles
DataBeyond, a China-based firm specializing in AI and optoelectronic sorting equipment, has announced a strategic partnership with New Ruibang Fiber Technology, a producer of recycled hollow polyester staple fibre (PSF). Together, they are developing eight PET bottle sorting lines, each with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year, to achieve a total sorting capacity of 300,000 tonnes annually in Suqian, China. This initiative aims to recycle approximately 20 billion PET bottles each year, significantly reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 450,000 tonnes.
The first production line of this project was launched in March, with the second and third lines scheduled to become operational in August. The entire project represents an investment of CYN 5 billion (€639 million). Hollow PSF, which finds applications in home goods, toys, and apparel, will be produced from the sorted PET bottles.
DataBeyond has deployed its cutting-edge optical sorting technology for the initial phase of the project. This includes six AI+SPEC hyperspectral sorters capable of identifying 256 wavelength bands to accurately remove contaminants such as PC, PVC, PP, PE, PO, PETG, and composites. The technology ensures high purity of the recycled material by analyzing incoming bales for various factors like material type, color, and contaminants including oil bottles, wide-mouth bottles, aluminum-plastic bottles, sand, metal, paper-filled bottles, and iron wires.
The sorting process is intricate, involving 11 stages and approximately 1 kilometre of equipment. This setup includes unpackers, conveyors, vibrating screens, de-labeling machines, bottle sorting, and pre-washing systems. Additionally, DataBeyond’s equipment includes continuous monitoring via the DataBeyond Cloud Brain, enabling remote upgrades, predictive maintenance, and 24/7 real-time management.
